National Research Center on Membrane Technologies (MEM-TEK) Special Event will be held on 20 November 2019.
In spite of the widely usage of membrane systems in Turkey, there was no commercial production facility for either ceramic or polymeric membranes. Turkey is one of the countries under water stress, so technologies providing alternative water sources such as water reuse and desalination will be essential in the future. In the global sense, membrane science and technology have gained a lot of importance due to running out of the limited water resources, recently. Membrane production requires high technology, knowledge and experience.
National Research Center on Membrane Technologies (MEM-TEK) Project which is led by Prof. Dr. Ismail Koyuncu, has established in 2010 with the support of Ministry of Development to provide opportunities for researchers and contribute a to global membrane science.
The construction of the center was started in 2010 and completed in 2011 and the installation of the devices was completed in 2012. In 2014, the Center gained the Application and Research Center (UYG-AR) status from Turkish Government.
Since its establishment, 33 master’s theses and 15 doctoral theses have been completed. In addition, 76 national and international supported scientific project have been successfully completed and 6 patents have been registered. More than 100 international scientific articles have been published since 2011. A reference book titled “Membrane Technologies and Applications in Water/Wastewater Treatment and Recovery” was published In 2018 with the support of Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. Additionally, more than 50 national and international book chapters were written by the researchers of the center.
Now, after 10 years, there are two commercial products of MEMTEK which is applied in the water and wastewater treatment plants. MEMTEK is also planning new commercial products related with membrane technologies in the very near future.
The vision of MEM-TEK is becoming a worldwide leader membrane technology center on membrane manufacturing, module development and process improvement on water and wastewater applications.
